Summer House & Garden Tours

Summer House & Garden Tours

Experience Sandon Hall in summer…

What better way to spend a balmy summer Sunday than discovering the treasures of stately Sandon Hall? A gem in the Staffordshire landscape, this neo-Jacobean mansion remains the private home of the Earls of Harrowby, so the opportunity to see behind its grand doors are few and far between.

On Sunday, 15th July, however, the Harrowbys are opening their doors and inviting visitors to do just that – with tours of both the 1852 house and its 50 acre formal garden on offer. Visitors can choose to tour just the house, just the garden - or both - with the option to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea once they’ve worked up an appetite.

The house tour will offer a glimpse into elegant country house interiors and regale the history of the hall and the family that has called it home for over 200 years, with historical highlights to include the story of the stunning Chinese wallpaper in the Drawing Room, which pre-dates the current hall by around 100 years. It will also tell of dramatic events – such the disastrous Christmas dinner that led to the hall burning down in the 1840s; and the rather morbid tale behind the portrait of a Prime Minister that graces the Dining Room. Visitors will also be able to explore the family museum on the first floor, which includes treasures such as an original letter from Nelson written to the 1st Baron Harrowby whilst on board HMS Victory and letters to various members of the family from historical figures – including Charles Dickens and an interesting collection of WWI and II recruitment posters.

In the garden, Head Gardener Grant Donner will give a guided walk around the 50 acre grounds; explaining their history, what seasonal works were undertaken to transform the gardens into their full glory in time for the summer wedding season, and also tell of some exciting plans for the future. Wellies or good boots are advised for the garden tour and hopefully sunhats and suntan lotion.

Booking is essential and tickets are priced at £7 for the house tour and £2 for the garden tour – or you can buy a special combination ticket that will see you enjoy both tours and afternoon tea for just £25, with a glass of bubbly thrown in to make your day extra special.

An Evening with Faith Tucker and Allan Schiller

An Evening with Faith Tucker and Allan Schiller

Classical muscial sensations

Join us to enjoy an evening of divine music with young classical crossover artist, Faith Tucker, and acclaimed concert pianist Allan Schiller.

About Faith…

Faith Tucker is a junior student at the renowned Birmingham Conservatoire, Faith’s strong Soprano voice and natural stage presence belie her years; seeing her conquer major concert halls and venues throughout the UK, performing both classical arias in their original languages and musical theatre.

Faith’s repertoire covers a broad range of musical styles, and during the evening you can expect to enjoy a diverse programme - including arias such as Pavarotti’s ‘Nessun Dorma’, George Bizet’s ‘Habanera’ from the opera Carmen, la donna e mobile from Rigoletto, Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Arms of an Angel’ and Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman’s ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ - to name but a few.

To catch a rising star at the beginning of what is set to be a stellar career is a rare opportunity, and we are delighted to host this talented young lady at Sandon Hall for an evening of wonderful music.

About Allan…

Allan is one of the most accomplished concert performers in the United Kingdom and has played with many of the finest orchestras playing sonatas to concertos.

From child prodigy making his debut in Leeds Town Hall at the tender age of ten, Allan performed with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and gave concerts throughout his teens before, in In 1961, becoming the first British pianist to win a scholarship to study at the Moscow Conservatoire.

On his return to England in 1965, Allan’s career flourished and was in demand for many concerts including many regional recital tours and concerto engagements with leading British orchestras and famous conductors including Solti, Haitink and Fruhbeck de Burgos, together with playing for numerous BBC broadcasts.

Allan has the rare quality of playing the piano in the vocal way once treasured by all great composers and until recent years, by the vast major of pianists. Instead of hitting the keyboard, he coaxes sounds from it in such a way as to make one forget that the piano is a percussive instrument; one whose sound is forever dying. Such skills are to be highly treasured.

Now, with a lifetime of international tours including Canada and the USA, Germany, Switzerland, France and Columbia and then regularly returning to the Soviet Union to perform in cities as far apart as Archangelsk and Tbilisi, Allan’s reputation as a world class performer continues; with two further wonderful accolades when he was invited to play for the commemorations of the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death in Salzburg and Capetown and then to play for HM the Queen and HRH Price Phillip, at Balmoral Castle.

You can see this world-class musician perform at Sandon Hall alongside one of the UK’s brightest young talents, for one night only…

Strictly ticket only. A licenced bar will operate throughout the evening.
